Math Tutor
I discovered my love for math in the 8th grade when I began tutoring my friend on the bus to school. I told her then I wanted to become a math teacher. In 2002, I joined the New York City Teaching Fellow program and began teaching Middle School Math in Brooklyn, NY. I earned a Master's in Math Education from St. John's University. I taught public school grades 5-9 for 9 years in New York City. I currently teach math at Portland Community College and Clackamas Community College.
Teaching Philosophy
I believe that all people can learn math! In my long career as a math instructor, I've gathered a large set of resources and ideas. I love to use a variety of approaches including games, stories, and hands-on activities, such as Origami, to engage students of all ages. For my community college course I've recorded my lessons for my students. You can see samples of my teaching on my YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/Mickijosi or find complete sets of links below in Micki's Math Resources.
Math Tutoring: I provide tutoring for students of all ages up to High School Algebra 2. I'm availlabe to meet for 1 hour sessions with students either in my home studio in the Lents neighborhood in Portland or via Zoom.
Individual Tutoring: $80
Small Group Tutoring:
2 students - $60 each ($120 total)
3 students - $50 each ($150 total)
4 students - $40 each ($160 total)
To book an appointment email me with the details of the grade level and days and times you are interested in: mickijosi@gmail.com. I typically tutor Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday afternoons.
Math Games
Just like Yoga, learning math is a practice. If it takes 400 repetition to learn something new but only 10 to 20 repetitions with play, then it makes sense that Math games would be the biggest bang for your buck practice wise. If you want to learn some math games with me feel free to reach out to schedule a Math Games Workshop with me in my studio or on Zoom.
Math Game Workshops can be scheduled for individual or small group of up to 4 participants for $25 each.
In the session we will learn one of these games:
1. Cribbage - Mental Math
2. Birthday Numbers - Patterns
3. Product Game - Multiplication
4. Capture the Circle - Fractions
5. Game 24 - Order of Operations
To schedule a one hour Math Game Workshop email mickijosi@gmail.com on a Saturday at 1pm, 2pm, or 3pm. Or check out my Math Videos Math Games and Books for Kids.
